NEW DELHI: The city saw shallow fog on Thursday, with visibility of 200 metres from 5.30am till 8.30am. While road traffic in Delhi was not affected, very dense fog in neighbouring regions delayed more than 20 trains and impacted vehicular movement.According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), the fog situation in the national capital could fluctuate between moderate and dense over the next three days. “Delhi may see dense fog on Friday morning and moderate to dense fog on Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning,” said an IMD official. The weather department has forecast dense to very dense fog for neighbouring states for the next 48 hours. This may impact road travel around the weekend, with IMD cautioning about difficult driving conditions, slower journey times and collisions due to fog.“Due to moisture and light winds at lower tropospheric levels over the Indo-Gangetic plains, dense to very dense fog in many pockets is very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and UP in night and morning hours in the next 48 hours. Subsequently, moisture at lower tropospheric levels over the plains is likely to decrease over regions above. Hence, dense fog in isolated pockets is likely in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh,” said IMD.No flight was delayed or cancelled on Thursday. “Low visibility procedures were also not activated,” said an official at IGI airport.Meanwhile, the maximum temperature dropped further to the season’s lowest. According to IMD, the maximum on Thursday was 20.6 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal, against 21.2 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The minimum temperature was recorded at 7.2 degrees, one degree below normal, against 7.1 degrees a day earlier. The maximum and minimum temperature on Friday is likely to hover around 20 and 6 degrees Celsius, respectively. The city’s air quality remained ‘very poor’. The AQI, on a scale of 0 to 500, stood at 342 against 328 a day earlier. The air quality is likely to deteriorate marginally but will remain ‘very poor’ on Friday. It is expected to see slight improvement on Saturday, but may stay in the same category.
