NEW DELHI: Exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen has accused a city hospital of “forced hip surgery” which the hospital has refuted, pointing out that her consent had been taken before the procedure.Nasreen told TOI she felt pain in her knees after falling from the stairs in her house. “When I visited Apollo Hospitals, the x-ray did not show anything wrong with the knees though the doctor said the femur was fractured. He told me I needed to undergo a hip transplant for which I wasn’t ready. I insisted on a second opinion, but the doctor forced the surgery on me,” the writer alleged. The hospital administration contradicted Nasreen and said she had given her consent for the procedure. It also said Nasreen was not stopped from seeking a second opinion. In fact, she had been requested to have a friend or relative present with her before the surgery.“The treating consultant, a surgeon with over three decades of experience in the field, diagnosed the condition using prescribed diagnostic and work-up tools. Given her medical condition and age, a hip replacement surgery was recommended. The surgery was successfully completed and the patient was discharged as per protocol. Because she is 60 years old, it was not possible to go for fixation as demanded by her and hip replacement was the only option,” the hospital said. The hospital stated that the author had been advised physiotherapy and other follow-up exercises for a full and safe recovery but that was not being followed. “We still care for her and request her to continue physiotherapy so that she starts walking at the earliest,” the hospital added.
