GURUGRAM: To fill critical gaps in health infrastructure, the city will get 40 urban health and wellness centres by March 2023. The objective is to improve surveillance and health research in both urban and rural areas so that communities are equipped in managing pandemics or other public health crises. Each centre will have one medical officer, one staff nurse and two support staff and will cater to a 15,000-20,000 people. These new centres will be linked with existing urban PHCs. They will focus on vulnerable areas of the city and will work on improving public health action especially focusing on the slums and similar habitations, vulnerable population and areas with limited access to public health interventions. “We will have 40 centres in this financial year. These new centres will strengthen public health surveillance, timely reporting, promote community engagement to ensure universal reach of health services. Increase access to specialist services polyclinics, that are close to the community, improve access to high quality care and minimise the out-of-pocket expenditure,” said Virender Yadav, chief medical officer, Gurugram . These units will decongest secondary and tertiary health care facilities. The location and population coverage will be flexible depending on population densities and presence of vulnerable and marginalised population sub-groups. The health department has requested urban local bodies to suggest government building or any unused government space which could be used for setting these units as per their ward area. Minimum three to four rooms with basic amenities are required for setting up the health facility.These units will provide facilities, including clinical services, specialist services including, tele-consultation, epidemic surveillance, referral to secondary/tertiary care facilities, disease surveillance and outbreak management, screening for communicable and non-communicable disease.
