New Delhi: Two youths were run over by a train in Shahdara while shooting videos on the railway tracks for their Instagram and other social media profiles.Cops said they got a call on Wednesday evening about a train accident at the railway lines near Kranti Nagar flyover. A team of police officials reached the location and found the bodies of two men lying on the tracks. They were later identified as Vansh Sharma (23) and Monu alias Varun (20).”Sharma was a third-year B.Tech student while Monu worked as a salesman at a nearby shop. The two used to make reels, short films and videos on their mobile phones and would often come to the railway tracks to record them. Their cellphones were recovered on the tracks. Inquest proceedings are underway,” said Hareesh HP, deputy commissioner of police, railways.TimesViewMaking short videos forsocial media is an obsession for many. But in doing so, as well as in posing for selfies, some take huge risks. There should be a sustained awareness campaign on the issue. Let us not forget, India accounted for half the world’s reported selfie deaths between 2011 and 2017, according to the US National Library of Medicine.Vansh had two profiles on social media. He claimed to be a video creator in one and a politician in the other. Monu similarly had two Instagram profiles – one said he was a video creator while the other stated he was a photographer.Vansh lived with his father, mother and younger brother in B block, Kranti Nagar Extension and Monu resided with his parents and an older brother across the street.Monu’s brother Sonu told TOI that before he left home, he had asked his mother to prepare rajma-chawal for him.”I suspect Monu died while trying to save Vansh as my brother’s phone was intact while that of Vansh was completely damaged,” said Sonu. Some locals claimed the two men had their headphones on. Sonu denied this, saying Monu had left them at home.
