NEW DELHI: Here’s some good news for the public. The Ashram flyover extension is likely to be inaugurated by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on February 28.”The work on the flyover has been almost completed. We have received confirmation from the CM’s office that the Ashram flyover extension will be inaugurated by Kejriwal. We are planning a big event to mark the inauguration. Some minor work on the flyover extension will continue even after the inauguration,” said a senior Public Works Department (PWD) official.Ashram flyover extension is one of the city’s biggest infrastructure projects. Providing a major boost to connectivity between Noida, South and Central Delhi, this six-lane flyover will provide a signal-free route till Noida and also, much-needed relief to the commuters passing from the busy Ashram intersection. The work on the flyover, which started in June 2020, was supposed to be completed within a year but it got delayed due to several reasons. In January this year, the department had started working on the 1.4-kilometre flyover extension and the work was estimated to be over in 45 days. The plan to decongest three main intersections – Maharani Bagh intersection, Ring Road-DND junction and Ring Road loop towards Sarai Kale Khan – was passed by the apex infrastructure body, UTTIPEC, in 2017. The project stretch from the Ashram flyover to DND Flyway is part of Ring Road, a signal-free arterial road.On a regular basis, there is a high flow of traffic from Lajpat Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan-Noida in the evening while in the morning, the rush is from Noida towards Lajpat Nagar. The current road capacity is inadequate in this congested area, which has several shops and private offices on one side of the road and residential colonies on the other. Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, senior PWD officials and local MLAs are also expected to take part in the inauguration ceremony.
