NEW DELHI: A 75-year-old woman was brutally murdered at her Lajpat Nagar home by intruders during a robbery bid on Tuesday evening. The deceased was identified as Kulwant Kaur. Sources said the intruders broke open an almirah inside the house and even snatched her earrings and chain before killing her. Kaur’s head had injuries and she may have been strangled too, police said. The PCR got a call about the incident at 5.17pm. Kaur lived alone on the first floor of the two-storey house in Lajpat Nagar-IV. Her relative, Amarjeet Kaur, lived on the second floor. Mandeep Singh Kohli, another relative of Kaur, said the murder was discovered by the household help, Sameena Parveen, who used to come to work in the morning and evening. “Kulwant was seen alive by Sameena at 11.30am. When she returned at 5pm, she found Kaur lying on the floor in a pool of blood. She immediately informed Amarjeet about the murder, who alerted police,” he added. “When Amarjeet went down, she saw Kulwant lying on the floor and one of the almirahs was ransacked. There were injury marks on her neck as someone had strangled her while snatching her chain. Injuries were also seen on her ears as her earrings were also missing. Her head was found smashed with a blunt object,” said Kohli, adding that only Parveen had access to Kaur’s house. However, he didn’t raise suspicion on anyone for the murder. Kaur was taken to National Heart Institute in East of Kailash where she was declared brought dead. Several teams were formed to track the killers after an FIR was registered at Amar Colony police station. Police are scanning footage from CCTV cameras installed in the locality for clues. Cops suspect at least one of the killers was known to Kaur. “The entry into the house seems friendly as the gate and lock were not found broken,” said an officer. Kaur had been living in Lajpat Nagar for over 40 years. Her husband, Surinder Singh, a businessman, passed away five years ago. The couple had three daughters, who are married. The incident has once again raised questions on the security of senior citizens in the city. Police said they were taking measures to assure security to the elderly living in different localities. Beat policemen have been asked to regularly visit senior citizens in their respective areas and SHOs have been asked to step up patrolling.
