NEW DELHI: Taking suo motu cognisance of a video of a sanitation worker being assaulted by a group of men in east Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar, Delhi Commission for Safai Karamcharis (DCSK) and Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Thursday urged the Delhi Police to register a case and conduct an investigation. The video, circulating on social media, captures a group of men, allegedly led by BJP MLA from Laxmi Nagar, Abhay Verma, asking a sanitation worker to open the lock of a community toilet. Some men can even be seen assaulting and abusing the worker. When asked, Verma said he got complaints from the residents of Kishan Kunj slum cluster that the caretaker keeps the toilet locked and allows people to use it only after being paid. “I was asking the caretaker to open the toilet and explain why he was keeping it locked. I never assaulted him,” Verma told TOI. “The caretaker later opened the toilet and even apologised to me and promised that he will never stop people from using it,” the MLA added.MCD assistant commissioner Rubal Singh from Shahdara south zone wrote to deputy commissioner of police (east) demanding registration of an FIR and strict action against the accused. “Amit, employed with MCD, was beaten up by some unidentified goons having close association with Abhay Verma, MLA, Laxmi Nagar…. since the matter involves physical assault, threats and public humiliation to a government employee, stringent action is required to be taken against the culprits,” Singh said in his letter. DCSK chairman Sanjay Gehlot asked police to conduct “proper investigation” . “I… would like to know the real story and the culprits concerned and whosoever responsible for the incident and who are at run be punished under due process of law…. action taken report be furnished to the office accordingly within three working days,” Gehlot further said.No reaction was available from Delhi Police. AAP alleged that the attack proved that BJP was anti-Dalit. “BJP is rattled with its defeat in MCD and is venting out anger on the sanitation workers of the underprivileged sections of society,” Kondli MLA Kuldeep Kumar said.Deputy Speaker and Mangolpuri MLA Rakhi Birla said the attack was on the entire Valmiki community. Verma, however, claimed that AAP was levelling false allegations. “BJP managed to defeat AAP on three of the four wards in my assembly area, which has irked them. I have not assaulted the worker. I was only helping residents of my area who were being regularly harassed by the worker,” he said.
