NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have made elaborate arrangements for a safe and secure New Year celebrations in the city. In addition to additional personnel on duty, there will also be checks on drunk driving and regulation of vehicular movement in popular areas.Dependra Pathak, special commissioner of police (law and order), said while more than 16,500 personnel will be deployed, anti-terror squads will also keep a tight vigil in areas that witness heavy footfall. “Parakram vans will be stationed in strategic locations. Our focus is women’s safety, so over 2,500 women personnel will also be deployed that day,” said Pathak.To check vehicles and to monitor drunk driving, more than 1,600 pickets will be put up. Alongside, 1,200 mobile patrolling vehicles and 2,074 patrol motorbikes will be on the streets, the special commissioner said. At least 1,850 personnel from the traffic police will assist the police counterparts in places that have heavy traffic movement.“Further, at least 125 points have been identified where drunk driving will be checked,” disclosed a police officer. “Traffic movement in Connaught Place will remain restricted after 8pm on December 31 and only authorised vehicles will be allowed.”On Thursday, Delhi Police issued a traffic advisory about restriction from 8pm onwards on December 31 in Connaught Place, New Friends Colony, Lajpat Nagar Central Market, Greater Kailash, Defence Colony, Lodhi Institutional Area, Hauz Khas Village, Chhatarpur, Dwarka, Janakpuri district centre, Model Town and Karol Bagh.“Commuters congregating at Connaught Place can park their vehicles near Gole Dak Khana, Patel Chowk, Mandi House, Minto Road, Panchkuian Road, KG Marg-Ferozshah Road crossing on Copernicus Lane, on KG Marg towards C Hexagon and the Bengali Market roundabout Bengali Market, etc.,” the advisory said.It said limited parking space would be available near Connaught Place on a first-come-first-serve basis. Illegally parked vehicles will be towed away. Elaborate traffic arrangements will also remain in place around India Gate for both pedestrians and vehicular traffic. In case of heavy pedestrian movement, vehicles may not be allowed at C Hexagon and could be diverted, the advisory cautioned.
