NEW DELHI: Armed criminals shot at a businessman in southeast Delhi in an attempt to snatch his cash on a busy road, but instead hit a passerby who died on the spot late Monday morning. The businessman was going to the bank on a scooty to deposit Rs 5.9 lakh in cash and accelerated on seeing one of the snatchers whipping out a pistol, which led to the bystander getting hit. The victim was identified as a 42-year-old ragpicker named Jullu Dafadar, who lived in Bangali Colony in Tughlakabad village. The bullet hit him on the right side of his chest. The police are yet to arrest the shooters. The crime took place on a bustling street near Pul Prahladpur area around 11.10am. Alerted by a passerby, cops reached the spot and found the ragpicker lying in a pool of blood near a public toilet. The businessman also contacted the police after depositing cash in the bankMan escapes bullet to tell horror tale to copsThe 46-year-old businessman, whom armed snatchers had fired at on a Pul Prahladpur street but had hit a ragpicker instead, later returned to the crime spot and gave his statement to the cops, deputy commissioner of police (southeast) Rajesh Deo said.”On Monday, the milk supplier was going to deposit Rs 5,90,000 in a bank at Eros Garden in Faridabad when the snatching bid happened,” Deo said. The businessman told the cops that he supplied milk in Lal Kuan and Vishwakarma Colony in the area.He stated that he arrived at Rampyari Camp around 11am, and that two people tried to stop his scooty by flagging him down. As he did not stop, one of them pulled out a pistol.”When he saw the pistol, he accelerated. The accused shot at him from behind but missed. The bullet hit a ragpicker who was picking waste near the spot,” he said.The milk supplier told cops that, shaken by the attack, he went straight to the bank and deposited the cash. From the bank itself, he narrated the incident to his brother, and then returned to the crime spot.On the basis of the milk supplier’s statement, a case was registered under sections 398 (attempt to commit robbery or dacoity while armed with a deadly weapon), 302 (murder), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention) of the IPC and sections 25, 27, and 28 of the Arms Act.Investigators claimed that they suspect the role of an insider in the case who had informed the accused about the milk supplier going to the bank with money and the route he would likely take. “There is a possibility that they may have been waiting for more than half an hour. We are probing the case from all angles,” the officer said.
