NEW DELHI: With an eye on decongesting busy commercial areas and controlling the illegal and haphazard parking of vehicles on roads, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi plans to complete the construction of seven parking lots by the year-end. The parking projects are sited at Nizamuddin Basti, Amar Colony, Shiva Market, Chandni Chowk, Qutub Road, Nigambodh Ghat and Fatehpuri. Once operational, these will provide parking space for 3,500 vehicles. “We have expedited work at the parking lots with special emphasis on those in busy commercial and market areas. These will ease traffic movement there and save time and fuel while increasing the revenue of the corporation,” said an MCD official. The six-storey puzzle parking with space for 86 cars at Nizamuddin Basti is expected to be completed this month. “The structure work is completed and the work on the facade, firefighting and electricity systems and the staircases work are in progress,” said the official. “We have already obtained in-principle approval from the fire service. Shifting of utilities such as power and phones has been completed and the shifting of the bus stand in front of the under-construction portion is under way, as is an Indraprastha Gas Ltd pipeline.” A six-storey puzzle parking for 81 cars at Amar Colony in Lajpat Nagar, a multi-level lot for 500 cars at Shiva Market Pitampura and another multi-level parking at Gandhi Maidan in Chandni Chowk for 2,338 cars are likely to be completed by December. “At Amar Colony, work on the foundation pump house and underground water tank is being undertaken,” said the official. The multilevel car parking project at Shiva Market was announced in February 2010 and was expected to be completed in 15 months after the then leader of the opposition in Delhi Assembly, VK Malhotra, laid the foundation of the project. But the project has been delayed several times. The Gandhi Maidan project too has missed at least two deadlines. “These two parking lots and one at Qutub Road with space for 174 cars are likely to be completed by November,” MCD said on Friday. “The stack parking at Nigambodh Ghat for 95 cars and another stack parking at Fatehpuri for 196 cars will be completed by October.” The MCD official added, “Commissioning of these parking spaces will bring huge relief to the general public and businessmen. It will also help ease the chronic traffic congestion and, thus, reduce pollution. We hope to complete the projects within the deadline.”
