NEW DELHI: Public Works Department is likely to complete the repair work at the Benito Juarez Marg underpass by April 28, said officials. The underpass was closed for traffic on April 21. “The work will be completed in the next two days after which the underpass will be opened to the public. The water leakage problem inside the underpass was the main reason behind the closure,” said a PWD official.Designed to decongest parts of Outer Ring Road near Dhaula Kuan, the Benito Juarez underpass had started developing issues regarding water leakage from the walls and an incomplete drain on the roadside. With underpasses prone to waterlogging during the monsoon season, the department took up the repair work on priority. The unique Y-shape structure of the underpass allows flow of traffic from Gurgaon to Delhi in the morning, and in the opposite direction in the evening. The underpass is a part of the corridor improvement project of PWD, which was taken up to improve the Outer Ring Road from IIT to NH-8 and its impact areas. The construction of the underpass, which was inaugurated in June last year, had started in 2015. The underpass, which is 1.8 kilometres long, benefits more than two lakh commuters on a daily basis.
