NEW DELHI: Data released by Delhi University (DU) on Monday showed that of the total number of applicants, over 1.42 lakh were from Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which accounts for over 80% of the total applicants. This was followed by applicants from Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) from where the varsity received 6,774 applications. The number of applications this year has dipped significantly. Compared with last year, there is a dip of over 86,000 from CBSE applicants. Similarly, there has been a drop in applicants from Board of School Education, Haryana too. While last year, it was the second highest with 9,918 applications, this year only 1,895 students have applied to DU. UP Board of High School and Intermediate Education, which saw 8,007 students apply to the university last year, has 5,695 applicants this year. Kerala Board of Higher Secondary Education, which was among the top five boards with the maximum number of applicants last year, also saw a dip this year. While last year there were 4,824 students, this year 1,847 applied to DU. With the university closing its preference-change window on Sunday, the college-programme count showed that BCom was the most popular course with Ramjas College receiving 57,640 applications, closely followed by Kirori Mal College with 57,613 applications. BCom (H) was another course that saw high registrations across colleges. Hansraj College received 46,537 applications, while Hindu College and Shri Ram College of Commerce got 46,273 and 45,952, respectively. Among other courses, BA (H) English also saw a good response with the number of applications crossing 50,000 in at least two colleges. While in Hindu College, the count stood at 51,018, in Hansraj College it was 50,670. The data showed that for supernumerary seats, like the sports category, the maximum number of applications received was for athletics at 620. This was followed by football (616 applications), 531 for basketball and 405 for volleyball. Cricket, on the other hand, received 397 applications. While the top five sports under the category have remained the same as last year, the number of applications have almost reduced by half. In 2021, 1,358 applications were received for athletics, while for football it was 1,300. Similarly, basketball received 1,246 applications last year, while volleyball and cricket got 835 and 752, respectively.
