NEW DELHI: The Delhi government’s transport department has deregistered over 54 lakh vehicles till March this year to remove old cars, two-wheelers, taxis and auto-rickshaws that are not fit for running on the city’s roads. The de-registration of vehicles means the owners cannot keep these vehicles in Delhi. A senior transport official said vehicle owners must get a no-objection certificate from the department for vehicles that have completed 10 or 15 years for diesel and petrol, respectively, and sell them in a state where they are fit to ply. Otherwise, the vehicles will be scrapped. The vehicles were de-registered from the records of 13 regional transport offices, the transport authority of Rajpura Road where only commercial vehicles are registered and the auto-rickshaw and taxi units of Burari.According to records, of the 54,89,575 deregistered vehicles, 11,69,783 – the highest for any RTO office in the city – were removed from the records by the Sheikh Sarai authority, followed by 7,06,921 from Janakpuri and 6,56,201 from Rohini.
