A resident of Parsvnath Prestige stands in his balcony, which overlooks the Supertech twin towers in Sector 93ANOIDA: The balconies of highrises around the Supertech twin towers have essentially turned into ‘VIP galleries’ that are in high demand for a ringside view of the tallest buildings in India to ever fall to an engineered implosion, report Anjali Singh & Abhijeet Singh. At ATS One Hamlet (Sector 104), Parsvnath Prestige (Sector 93A) and other societies, the Sunday afternoon of many residents who have a vantage point have been “booked” by relatives and guests who want to witness the moment. In some houses, entire families are gathering at 2.30pm to experience the “once in a lifetime” event. For 2.30pm show, binoculars, video call & ‘entry fee’Some say relatives and friends are all keen to join them, though traffic restrictions may bust their plans. Alok Sahdev, a resident of ATS Hamlet, has a 7-year-old grandson who is visiting from Gurgaon with his parents and a pair of binoculars to see the towers go down at the stroke of 2.30pm on Sunday. Sahdev said he will also take his family in the US on video call around that time. “I have been joking with my relatives that they can witness the famous demolition for an entry fee of Rs 500 per person, and when our 16th floor flat is booked out, I will send the guests to our neighbour’s place as well,” he said on Friday. A resident of Parsvnath Prestige, Anshu Sarda claimed there couldn’t be anyone else more excited than him. He is organising a “party” involving six of his close friends, who will all watch the demolition from his tower’s terrace with snacks and drinks. “I am just waiting for the day. If things go well, I would also raise a toast to the victory of residents who fought a long legal battle for this day,” he said. SK Leekha, another occupant of ATS Hamlet, said his family was going to step out onto the balcony with steaming cups of tea. “A few of our relatives have been asking if they can also join us, but I think the traffic closures would make it difficult for them to come here,” he said. Some others, aficionados of all topics science, said they wanted to know what blasting 3,700kg of explosives would sound like. “I have read that the buildings will be razed in just 9-12 seconds. I’m excited about the actual sound. I’ve seen videos of other demolitions, but to hear this in reality will be an experience. I will also record the sound to keep as a permanent record. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event, something of this scale may not happen again in Noida,” said Pramod Jadav, who lives in a 7th floor flat in Lotus Panache, Sector 110. Enthusiasm and plans aside, there’s also apprehension of the demolition at Emerald Court in Sector 93A going wrong. “With less than 48 hours to go, WhatsApp groups are full of speculation about the different scenarios that can play out on demolition day. Since I’m a structural engineer, I try to clear their doubts and make them feel better about the processes followed,” Sahdev told TOI. Some others living in the sectors near the towers are praying that the demolition process goes without a hitch, and that everyone is safe in the aftermath of the implosion. “No matter how much you plan, there is always a chance that things might go wrong. I will pray for the residents and the blasting team until there’s a formal signal from the authorities that everything went well,” said another resident of Lotus Panache who wished to remain anonymous. A few others, like 18-year-old Yashvi Singh, are more concerned about the effects of the dust cloud that will be generated by the implosion. “I want to see the demolition, but I probably won’t as there will be a lot of dust. I’m choosing a window seat from my flat, and will make a video for my friends,” she said. The 18-year-old lives in Parsvnath Prestige Yogesh Pandey, also from the same society in Sector 93A, said he fears the “consequences”. He is delaying his father’s visit for cancer treatment by a few more days to avoid any exposure to dust pollution. “Now, I’m a little fearful of even witnessing the demolition from my house,” he said.
