NEW DELHI: New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) took over the operations of the parking lot at four designated sites on Kartavya Path from Friday. NDMC vice-chairman Satish Upadhyay said, “We have received a letter from Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for taking over the parking sites and initially we will allow parking of 550-600 cars and 32-40 buses. The parking facility will be free for the next 15 days, and the sites will be outsourced to the concessionaire after that. The parking rates will be similar to the rates in the rest of the NDMC parking lots and we will oversee their operations.” Most of the facility has been made operational and 15 NDMC workers have been deployed for their smooth functioning, the vice-chairman added. For the convenience of the visitors to Kartavya Path, CPWD has created parking space for 1,117 cars and 40 buses, which will be connected with the pedestrian underpasses so that visitors can easily access all the lawns. These parking sites are located between Janpath and Rafi Marg (space for 500 cars), C Hexagon and Man Singh Road (space for 200 cars) and Man Singh Road and Janpath (space for over 400 cars). “Considering the construction agencies have taken over the site between Man Singh Road and Janpath and their vehicles are parked there, it will be opened for the general public after a few months. Till that time, the rest of the parking lots will be utilised,” said a CPWD official. The new parking lots will streamline the system and will be a welcome change for the visitors who earlier had to make do with unauthorised parking lots allowed by the authorities to avoid traffic jams by vehicles.
