NEW DELHI: Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal revealed on Saturday that she was sexually assaulted as a minor by her father and that the trauma made her resolve to fight for the rights of women.”I was sexually assaulted by my father. I was very small at that time. My father used to beat me up and I would hide under the bed to save myself,” Maliwal said, while speaking at the DCW International Women’s Day Awards ceremony. ‘Wanted to teach lesson to such men’ Revealing that her father had sexually abused her as a child, Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal said on Saturday he would grab her by the hair and slam her head against the wall, leading to bleeding. “This went on till I was in Class 4,” she recalled.The DCW chief said even as a child she would tell herself that she had to get the perpetrators of such crimes punished. “While hiding under the bed, I used to think about how I will teach a lesson to such men who abuse women and children, and how I can help women get their rights,” she said. Speaking about a viral Holi celebration video of a Japanese woman in the city, Maliwal said, “In the clip, some men kept applying Holi colours on the woman even though she was feeling harassed and screaming for help. Those men did not stop. We are issuing a notice to Delhi Police. Those men should be identified and put behind bars.”
