NEW DELHI: One of the carriageways on Janak Setu flyover, a major arterial road connecting central to west Delhi, has been shut for repair work for three weeks. The route from Kirby Place in Delhi Cantt towards Nangal Pul in Janakpuri is now out of bounds for commuters while the other side is still operational. The closure has already impacted traffic on Sagarpur flyover, Pankha Road, Cariappa Marg and Delhi Cantt railway station. The situation could worsen in the coming days as both the carriageways could be shut for repairs, which may take about a month. On Thursday, there was almost a kilometre-long snarl beginning from Pankha Road all the way up to Sagarpur flyover. A DTC bus breaking down on the flyover did not help matters, as it left only one lane operational. Some people could be seen jumping with their two-wheelers to the other side of the carriageway in order to avoid the jam. Locals also said it was also taking longer now to cross the signal just ahead of the Sagarpur flyover as the volume of traffic has increased. Sudhansh Babbar, a resident of Janakpuri who works with a private firm, said since the closure of the flyover, the traffic has been moving slowly. It’s worse during peak hours, he added. “The repairs will take long. Till then, we will have to make our way through this. The traffic on Sagarpur flyover should be regulated so that tailbacks can be avoided,” said Babbar. Meanwhile, traffic police used social media to alert commuters about the closure and put up posters on Cariappa Marg. They also installed a loud speaker asking commuters to take Sagarpur flyover and Pankha Road to head towards west Delhi. According to PWD officials, a stability study done more than a year ago by IIT-Delhi on Janak Setu flyover, which was constructed in 1982 during the Asian Games, found it was due for repairs. An official said the traffic diversion plan has already been worked out with the police.
