NEW DELHI: A lookout circular has been issued against an assistant professor of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), who allegedly impersonated LG VK Saxena and called the varsity’s vice-chancellor asking him to appoint a specific candidate in the English department. Following a complaint by the GGSIPU vice-chancellor, police lodged a case of impersonation (IPC Section 419) on October 2. During investigation, it emerged that Rohit Singh, who teaches economics at the university, had called from the United Kingdom for his sister’s appointment. The accused had moved an anticipatory bail application at a Dwarka court, which was dismissed. The probe revealed that the university VC, Dr Mahesh Verma, got a call on September 30 by an unidentified person impersonating the LG. The caller asked for the appointment of a particular candidate in the English department in a since cancelled recruitment exercise. Police rounded up some people in connection with the crime, but no arrests were made. The LG took a serious view of the impersonation and emphasised that it had never been his style of functioning of making calls or entertaining any request involving out-of-turn favours, benefits or unethical practices. He also cautioned all officials concerned to strictly check with his secretariat in case of any such calls/messages received by them from someone impersonating him or using his name. The impersonation came to the fore after Verma contacted the LG’s Secretariat, which denied having made any such call. The matter was immediately reported to the police. “During investigation, the impersonator was identified as Rohit Singh, an assistant professor in the economics department of the university. He had made the call posing as the LG for the appointment of his sister, Manvi Singh, in the English department. From the call detail records of the vice-chancellor’s landline number, it was revealed that the call was made from a UK-based number,” said the LG secretariat. Police found that calls had also been made from the UK number to Manvi Singh and her father, Rajpal Singh. The two were interrogated and they confessed that the number belonged to Rohit, who had left for the UK on September 27. “An internal inquiry by the university found the alleged involvement of some other officials in this impersonation case. Suitable action against the persons concerned for violation of Conduct and Service Rules has been initiated. It was also revealed that Rohit Singh had travelled to the UK without the mandatory prior permission of the competent authority. A show-cause notice has been issued to him by GGSIPU,” said an official.
