GURGAON: A district court convicted two men of murder and sentenced them to life imprisonment despite the only eyewitness turning hostile. While pronouncing the verdict, additional sessions judge Virender Parshad referred to the story of Lord Ram, who spent 14 years in exile just to keep his father’s word, and cited Indian culture, in which “fathers and grandfathers are believed to be next to God”.While one of the convicts was the victim’s son, the other was his grandson (daughter’s son). According to the case diary, Mohit was urinating near the house of his grandfather, Krishan Sehrawat, when the elderly man’s wife chased him down the road on December 8, 2021.Mohit’s maternal uncle, Manjeet, came to his rescue and started hurling stones at Krishna Devi, Krishan’s wife. Hearing her cries, Krishan came out of the house, but was thrashed by Mohit and Manjeet. They hit Krishan with a stone, which led to his death in hospital.Baljeet Singh, the assistant public prosecutor, said Krishan died of head injuries. “According to the photographs we have on record, there were stones around the body, stained with blood. The forensic report also said that Manjeet’s shirt had stains of human blood on it,” he told the court.Raj Kumar, who argued for Mohit and Manjeet, questioned the report. He said the report was inconclusive on whether the blood stains on Manjeet’s shirt matched with Krishan’s samples. In her testimony, Krishna Devi didn’t indict her son and grandson. The court, however, refused to buy her argument, saying there were specific reasons for her to give a clean chit. “After all, she is an Indian mother. She has love and emotion for her disgruntled son. It is clear that she, out of fear of losing them, intentionally and deliberately twisted the occurrences in a way so that they may get the benefit of doubt,” the judge observed on Thursday.Referring to Ramayan and Indian culture, the judge observed that the accused became “so inhuman” that they murdered “their own blood in a brutal manner”. “Both are young and mature persons. They forgot under the heat of their uncontrolled passion that they belong to a country where fathers and grandfathers are believed to be next to God,” judge Parshad said.”Manjeet came to earth through his murdered father, Krishan Kumar. Mohit also forgot that his relationship with the deceased, Krishan, is of pious blood bondage. In our country, children are taught the stories of Lord Ram, who had sacrificed 14 years in exile just to keep the promise of his father,” the court observed. The court then convicted the duo, keeping in view “the gravity of the offences committed” by them. “This court is of the opinion that both the convicts are required to be awarded life imprisonment.”
