NEW DELHI: A day after the MCD House witnessed an unprecedented clash before the newly elected municipal councillors could take oath, AAP on Saturday staged a protest at the LG secretariat, alleging a conspiracy to get nominated councillors to vote in the mayoral election.Raising slogans against lieutenant governor VK Saxena and BJP, AAP demanded written assurance from the LG and the MCD commissioner that nominated members won’t be allowed to vote. “The LG and the municipal commissioner should give a statement in writing that whenever the election for the post of mayor is held, the nominated members will not be allowed to vote. Until the statement comes, our struggle to protect the Constitution will continue,” Kalkaji MLA Atishi said. The poll was postponed on Friday after a clash between the AAP and the BJP members in the house when AAP objected to the presiding officer’s decision to let the 10 aldermen take the oath first. The new date of the house meeting and the elections is yet to be announced.A large number of AAP workers, including senior functionaries, MLAs and municipal councillors, started gathering at the LG’s house in north Delhi’s Civil Lines early on Saturday. AAP feared that the presiding officer, who was nominated by the LG ignoring the elected government’s recommendation, was intentionally administering oaths to the aldermen to let them vote in the elections. Atishi said under Article 243R of the Constitution and Section 3B1 of Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, nominated councillors couldn’t vote in any house meeting.”Every MLA, councillor and worker of AAP is willing to give their life, but will not allow the Constitution to be murdered like this,” Atishi said.
