GHAZIABAD: The man who smashed a fellow customer’s head with a brick during a brawl triggered by a parking dispute outside an eatery in a horrifying road rage attack was arrested in the early hours of Friday, ending a manhunt that began on Tuesday night with a passerby’s short mobile video providing the initial lead. The video showed a man in a yellow T-shirt and shorts standing over his victim and bashing him up with a brick. Police had by Thursday identified that man as Loni resident Kallu Pandit. After his arrest on Friday, details emerged. Chiranjeevi Sharma (known locally as Kallu) also gave police a clearer picture of how the spat between over parking outside a dhaba in Tila Mor turned into a deadly brawl on the night after Diwali. Chiranjeevi, cops said, used to run a gym in Loni till a few years ago. He now works as a salesman for a manufacturer of chips and other snacks. He had gone to the dhaba on Loni road with Mohit Bhati, a friend, and Mohit’s cousin Chandan Bhati, on October 25. The three had been drinking in the hours before that, police said. Arun Singh (35), a wrestler-turned-dairy businessman, and his two friends were already there. The groups’ paths crossed when Arun found a Celerio blocking his Santro after the meal. Mohit agreed to remove the Celerio, but a heated argument broke out when the Celerio scraped the Santro in the process. “Chiranjeevi said he first hit Arun, after which both groups clashed. Arun apparently hit back, slapping Chiranjeevi, who fell to the ground. That enraged Chiranjeevi, who started smashing Arun’s head with a brick, and did so repeatedly,” said Gyanendra Singh, SP (city-2). Witnesses had earlier described the brawl as “extreme drunken rage”. The autopsy report shows why. According to it, the SP said, Arun was hit with the brick at least 10 times. “Pathologists also found some pieces of the brick from the victim’s head,” Singh said. Mohit and Chandan – also believed to be involved in the spat – are on the run. But cops have ruled out the involvement of Arun’s two friends, Deepak and Sanjay Rawat, who were named in the FIR based on Arun’s family’s complaint as they had fled the site after the clash. The SP said Chiranjeevi was tracked down to Karan Gate late on Thursday night and taken into custody. But he sustained a bullet injury on his right leg, purportedly in a gunfight, on Friday morning when he tried to escape. Police said they had learnt from Chiranjeevi that the Celerio had been left in a forested area near Hindon bridge in the Farukh Nagar. “A team of cops went to the site with Chiranjeevi on Friday morning. Over there, he snatched a pistol from a sub-inspectorand pointed it at one of the constables. Then he pushed another cop and ran. Police combed the area and managed to surround him. He started firing, and police retaliated. He was arrested after a bullet hit his leg,” the SP said. Chiranjeevi (32) is admitted to a hospital in the city and his condition is stable. Mohit and Chandan’s last known location was traced to Kanpur and a police team has been sent there, the SP said, adding that: “Mohit’s father is a known property dealer in Loni and the Celerio was registered in his name. The three accused have been booked under sections 302 (murder) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the IPC and the Criminal Law Amendment Act. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, SHO of Tila Mor police station, told TOI that the investigation and Chiranjeevi’s statement did not point to the involvement of Arun’s friends. “Deepak and Sanjay were released today (Friday) evening,” he said. Police said Chiranjeevi was booked for attempt to murder in another case in 2016. He was among some men who had allegedly opened fire at a Sahibabad resident over a dispute.
