NEW DELHI: Seeking to ease the way for traffic between Signature Bridge and areas abutting Uttar Pradesh, the Public Works Department has started working on an elevated corridor on Mangal Pandey Marg between Mandoli and Bhopura border in east Delhi. Under the project, PWD will construct a six-lane flyover on Mangal Pandey Marg starting at a point around 70 metres from the foot of the existing railway overbridge there. According to PWD officials, a non-motorised zone and a footpath will be created on both sides of the carriageway. For the aesthetic enhancement of the area, the contractor selected for the project will also install artwork and murals under the elevated corridor as approved by PWD. Work on improving the two existing traffic junctions under the proposed flyover will also be undertaken alongside footpath and drainage work, landscaping, road signages and road safety fixtures, informed an official. “We have received the sanction for the projects to provide a signal-free corridor for motorists between Wazirabad and the UP border. The project includes construction of a flyover, U-turns and widening of the existing roads to aid commuters experience smoother travel,” said another PWD officer. To enable this project, PWD will dismantle the pedestrian bridge on Mangal Pandey Marg and provide road users with a safer hump subway. The dimensions of the subway are planned to be five metres wide and a little over two metres high. A similar hump subway is also being built at the Ashram flyover extension project. Of the six U-turns proposed, the first will be constructed near the Nand Nagri police station. Two back to back U-turns will be made 500 metres from the turn near the police station. Another set of back-to-back U-turns are proposed near the Gagan Cinema bus stop and there will be one more near the turn after the Gagan Cinema junction. Under the tender conditions, the contractor selected will also handle the operation and maintenance of the infrastructure for the period of five years after the completion of the project, with the company obliged to deploy security staff on the site during the agreed period. Recently, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal laid the foundation stone ceremony for another elevated corridor starting at Anand Vihar ISBT to help commuters in east Delhi areas along the Uttar Pradesh border. Due to the mushrooming of unauthorised colonies, east Delhi has become highly congested and projects of this sort are meant to deal with the transport problem.
