NEW DELHI: Head constable Ajit Singh, posted at north Delhi’s Wazirabad police station, was attacked by local residents several times when he tried to track down the proclaimed offenders of the locality. Over 10 months, Singh arrested 80 such individuals, of whom 47 were involved in heinous crimes like murder, dacoity, robbery and rape.Singh has a unique knack of drawing criminals out of their holes. Speaking to TOI, the head constable said, “It is a team effort, but hunting for a proclaimed offender is a tough task. I started as a constable in 2010 and till now have caught 200-250 such people. Once while chasing one of them in Mayapuri, I fell down, got hurt, but ran after him again.”Singh credits his success to family, which has been supportive of his job. He has a wife and two daughters aged 9 and 5 years, who have always motivated him in his work.Sagar Singh Kalsi, DCP (North), said, “Ajit Singh has arrested 80 proclaimed offenders since August 19 last year when posted in Wazirabad police station. Out of the 80 men he has nabbed, 47 are involved in crimes like attempt to murder, rape, dacoity, robbery, snatching, burglaries and car theft.” Kalsi said Singh has been successful because he is dauntless, conscientious, persevering and energetic.Other officers who worked with Singh testified he had developed human resources at the local level and was conversant with criminal behaviour patterns and crime trends, all qualities that had resulted in his being posted as someone to go after the local proclaimed offenders at the police station. Most of the offenders that Singh arrested had fake names, addresses and identity cards. They were rarely found at the locations and in some cases had even faked their religion or the community they belonged to. “In order to encourage the head constable and in appreciation of the outstanding work he has done, his application for an out-of-turn promotion to the post of assistant sub-inspector is being sent to police headquarters,” said Kalsi.
