NEW DELHI: Delhi’s National Zoological Park has approached the Dubai zoo to procure a giraffe. Officials at the Delhi zoo said that they had earlier approached the Patna, Mysuru and Bengaluru zoos to procure a giraffe, but in vain.A senior Delhi zoo official said that they have now requested the Dubai zoo to spare a calf or an adult giraffe. “We have written to the authorities at the Dubai zoo to understand the process of procurement and are awaiting their response. The zoos of Patna and Mysuru have giraffes to spare, but there are some issues that may delay or cancel the animal’s procurement,” said Akanksha Mahajan, director of the Delhi zoo.”The animal’s procurement from Patna is getting delayed as the calves there are too young. Since more zoos are coming up in Karnataka, the Mysuru and Bengaluru zoos are preferring to send their giraffes there. Hence, we are exploring our options. There is another option to get a giraffe and a zebra from South Africa, but the cost to bring them here is very high,” said Mahajan. The Delhi zoo is also planning to get a stump-tailed macaque and a lemur. We are in talks with the authorities concerned in Mizoram to procure a macaque, an official said. The zoo aims at procuring more herbivores to maintain a diverse genetic pool.
