NEW DELHI: The city recorded the coldest night of the season on Thursday with the minimum temperature dropping to 18.5 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal, at Safdarjung, the city’s base weather station. However, the Ridge observatory in north Delhi witnessed the lowest minimum temperature at 17 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the minimum temperature was expected to dip further to 16 degrees Celsius in the next seven days. Before this, the lowest minimum temperature of the season was recorded at 19.2 degrees Celsius on October 10. “Dry and cold northwesterly winds from the Himalayan region have started blowing towards the plains, leading to a gradual drop in minimum temperature in Delhi. As the skies have become clearer now after the rain spell last week, days will become slightly warmer, but nights will continue to witness a gradual dip in mercury,” said a Met official. Another Met official said the absence of cloud cover makes the day warm, while the heat quickly dissipates at night, which causes a fall in minimum temperature. The minimum temperature on October 1 was 23.7 degrees Celsius and, in the last 13 days, there has been a fall in temperature by 5.2 degrees Celsius. “The night temperature has started witnessing a gradual dip. The minimum temperature is expected to remain below 20 degrees Celsius for the next few days. Though it is mostly likely to hover at 18-19 degrees, it is predicted to dip to 16 degrees Celsius in the next seven days,” added the Met official. IMD’s data showed that in 2021, the lowest minimum temperature was recorded at 14 degrees Celsius on October 29. The lowest night temperature in October 2020 was 12.5 degrees Celsius on October 29. The all-time record of the lowest minimum temperature in October was on October 31, 1937 at 9.4 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature was 31 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal. The relative humidity oscillated between 54% and 96%. Rain is unlikely for the next seven days.
