NEW DELHI: An exam at Delhi University’s School of Open Learning on Saturday was abruptly cancelled, causing confusion among students. The BA programme exams were slated to begin on Saturday. “Some students had even started writing their answers when their answer scripts were taken away and they were told that their exams had been cancelled. Notices were later put up at the exam centre gates,” said a statement issued by Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS), the student organisation of SOL. The notice at the exam centre, signed by the joint registrar, said, “This is to notify that the exam scheduled today i.e. March 4, 2023, both morning and evening sessions, of the students of School of Open Learning has been cancelled due to unavoidable circumstances. The next date of the examination will be announced later. The inconvenience caused is highly regretted.”Students held a protest at the SOL centre. Police were also called. They held a rally to the arts faculty and later submitted a memorandum addressed to DU vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh. “This exposes the sheer mismanagement and chaos that has become the hallmark of SOL and DU administration that are least concerned about the future of lakhs of students. The students, who had come from afar with their parents and relatives, were shocked to learn that their exams had been cancelled at the last moment. It should be noted that students in SOL come from the poorest of the poor families, but instead of making efforts to provide them with good quality education, DU and SOL authorities have left no stone unturned to exacerbate their plight,” said a statement issued by KYS. The students said they were not even provided with study materials and had appeared for the internal assessment without them.”Even the notification for the internal assessment was released at the very last moment i.e. a day before the internal assessment was to begin. Consequently, several students could not take the internal assessment exams due to mismanagement on SOL’s part and issues such as the crashing of the website and server being down, among others,” the student body said. The student organisation has also decided to take the issue up with the University Grants Commission and the Union education ministry.SOL officiating principal US Pandey said: “There was some technical issue with the admit cards due to which university thought it was best to cancel.”
