(file photo)NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old undertrial prisoner has died following a fist fight with a fellow inmate at Tihar Jail. The deceased, identified as Samir Khan, used to live with his family in Bhalswa Dairy. He had been arrested in a robbery case and was lodged in the jail since November 2021. The other inmate was in prison since May 2022 for alleged involvement in robbery and burglary cases. Both were in the same barrack in central jail No. 5. According to Tihar DG Sandeep Goel, the scuffle took place around 9pm on Monday between the two inmates inside their barrack. “They exchanged a few punches and Khan suddenly collapsed, apparently due to head injuries. Jail staff reached the barrack and other inmates were also called for help. Khan was taken to the jail dispensary, from where he was referred to a hospital. He was declared dead on arrival,” Goel said. Goel said the incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed near the spot and it seemed like the fight was over a trivial issue. “The entire episode lasted 15-20 seconds. We are questioning another inmate in the case,” another jail official said. When asked about the presence of jail staff at the time of the incident, Goel said the fight happened inside the barrack and the staff was outside the ward. The officer said inquest proceedings have been completed by the metropolitan magistrate and a report is awaited. Police have also been informed about the incident. “The report of the inquest proceedings will take time as all facts will be checked,” he added. A post-mortem was conducted on Tuesday by the board of directors. In August 2021, 29-year-old gangster Ankit Gujjar was killed inside Tihar Jail a day after a brawl.
