NEW DELHI: A drug trafficker was arrested by Delhi Police’s Special Cell with heroin worth Rs 20 crore. The contraband was sent from Myanmar via Manipur and Assam. Raids are being conducted to nab other members of the cartel. DCP Jasmeet Singh said the accused, Akhilesh Kumar Ray (39), was supplying heroin in Delhi-NCR and other states for the last seven years. The operation was conducted by a team comprising inspectors Shiv Kumar and Jitender Mavi, who nabbed Ray from near a mall in Ghazipur after getting a tip-off. A trap was laid after the cops received information that the suspect had collected a big consignment of heroin from Bihar and was on his way to Delhi. The accused was apprehended and 4kg heroin was seized from him. Ray revealed that the consignment came to Assam from Manipur and was shipped to Bihar for further distribution. Their contact in Manipur, known in the trafficking world as “Mullaji”, is a major player. The cartel also used to procure the contraband from Naxalite affected areas in Jharkhand and militancy affected areas of Manipur where the drug was processed in local labs using the opium cultivated there. “However, the quality of heroin smuggled from Myanmar and Manipur was much superior to the one manufactured from opium. That is why heroin manufactured in Myanmar and Manipur was in high demand internationally and also in India,” said DCP Singh. Police also claimed that the heroin brought from Myanmar and Manipur was cheaper than their competitors.
