NEW DELHI: To strengthen its enforcement team, the excise department of Delhi government has got 24 Delhi Police personnel, who will help the department keep a check on smuggling, bootlegging and serving alcohol on restaurants without licence.According to officials, a team of four sub-inspectors, 10 head constables and an equal number of constables have joined the excise intelligence bureau. More Delhi Police personnel may join in the next few days, senior officials said. The excise department had repatriated 39 Delhi Police personnel in August last year when controversies related to the registration of FIR by CBI in purported liquor scam engulfed the excise department. These officials were relieved with immediate effect and were directed to report to their parent department without waiting for any formal relieving orders. The action had reduced the strength of the excise intelligence bureau to just 21.In absence of the full team from Delhi Police, the excise department carried out its enforcement activities with the help of sub-divisional magistrates and tehsildars and also coordinated with the police while conducting searches and raids. The primary responsibility of the excise intelligence bureau is to collect intelligence, keep surveillance and maintain information of excise offences, collect and disseminate information regarding prominent offenders and history sheeters and monitor detection, investigation and trial of offences under the Delhi Excise Act.“These personnel keep an eye on people smuggling non-duty paid liquor from the neighbouring states to Delhi and prevent making and selling of spurious liquor,” said a senior Delhi government official.Sources said there have been regular inputs of city restaurants serving alcohol without obtaining the liquor licence and the excise teams frequently conduct raids, seize liquor and register cases against them.Another official said that there have been several cases of non-duty paid liquor being sold in city bars which the excise intelligence bureau busted.
