NEW DELHI: Continuing its crackdown, Delhi Police has seized over 2,200kg of firecrackers from across the city. A 22-year-old man was arrested at 10pm on Tuesday with 570kg of banned firecrackers in northwest Delhi’s Kanhaiya Nagar. Following a tipoff regarding delivery of firecrackers, a team led by inspector (special staff) Amit Kumar conducted a raid and arrested Mohit Gupta with a bag of crackers, said deputy commissioner of police (northwest) Usha Rangnani. “Mohit had stored more firecrackers for sale in his house. Last year, he bought the stock in bulk from a dealer in Ghaziabad and sold most of them,” Rangnani added. Another 22-year-old man, identified as Shahzad, was caught in Sadar Bazar on Wednesday and around 800kg firecrackers were recovered from him. Three more people have been arrested from southeast Delhi with 640.83kg firecrackers. After receiving an information that two people would come in a car and an auto with firecrackers near Amar Colony, police laid a trap and arrested Shubham Gupta and Pawan Arora, both 24. A raid was conducted at a shop in Kotla Mubarakpur after the duo claimed that they had bought the stock from there and planned to sell it at high prices in their local market. The shop owner, Gopal Das, who was also nabbed, said he used to sell illegal firecrackers secretly, police claimed, adding that 423.4kg of firecrackers were seized. In another case, a 65-year-old man, Dinesh Chand, was arrested with 250kg of firecrackers in south Delhi’s Madangir. On October 10, the Supreme Court refused to lift the total ban imposed by the Delhi government on firecrackers.
