NEW DELHI: A woman who was accompanying the Kanjhawala accident victim on the scooter at the time of the incident on Tuesday recorded her statement before the magistrate and claimed the accused had ignored their screams and driven away. TOI had reported that police had tracked down the woman who was seen on CCTV on multiple occasions. Her statement was recorded under Section 164 of CrPC, which is not retractable. Cops said her version has been largely corroborated from CCTV footage and the statements of others, including hotel staff and their friends. Confirming that she and Anjali had met with an accident in the early hours of Sunday morning, the woman, Nidhi, said they had a close shave before the incident as well when their scooter almost rammed a truck. She claimed Anjali was angry after a break-up with her boyfriend. She also narrated how the Baleno driver, who has been identified as Deepak Khanna, went back and forth several times before zooming away from the spot and did not pay heed to the victims’ cries and screams. She said that she got scared and went home on foot and narrated the incident to her family. “I knew Anjali through another friend and we became friends 10-15 days ago. We were coming back after a party and she was supposed to drop me home and then go to her house. We were at the hotel where her boyfriend and other friends were present,” she said in her statement. Nidhi claimed Anjali insisted on driving the scooter. “When I stopped her, she said it was her scooter and she would drive. She was driving rashly and I had to control the scooter from swaying while sitting pillion,” she claimed. She further claimed Anjali was angry that her boyfriend had ditched her. “She was saying she wanted to marry him and wondered how he could do this to her. During this time, we went very close to a truck. We both could have died but I bent and pressed the brakes and got the scooter on the side. I told her to ride properly, or else I would take her keys,” she added. “After this, we took the cut and the Baleno came in front. It did not stop or slow down. We even moved the scooter to the side but the car still didn’t stop. It hit us and we both fell. I fell on the side with the scooter but she fell towards the car and came under it,” said Nidhi. “Her leg or feet got stuck in the car and she couldn’t get out. The men in the car went back and forth and drove even though she was screaming. “The occupants saw that she was stuck under the car and yet kept driving. It wasn’t like they did not know… They could see that it was a woman who was stuck under their car. They did not once come out to even check,” she said. Nidhi said she returned home and informed her mother and grandmother about the accident. “My brain stopped working. I was hopeless. I could not think of anything and just walked back home. I thought those men would remove her from the car and leave her but they did not do this and kept on roaming around even though she was stuck under the car,” she added. “I was not in a good state after the incident and did not know who I should talk to, so I just kept quiet. Later, police traced me down and I told them everything that I had seen. I saw the news the following day and was told she had died. It was completely shocking…,” she further said.
