NEW DELHI: MCD mayor Shelly Oberoi on Thursday said that best practices will be adopted for sterilisation of stray dogs and carrying out a dog survey, which has not been done for the last seven years in the city.Speaking at a news conference that she had called to discuss the action planned to control the stray dog population, Oberoi said: “I noticed several loopholes in the current system, including the lack of infrastructure for NGOs. There are questions even regarding the sterilisation process. It was also found that 16 out of 20 sterilisation centres are operational.” Oberoi held meetings with NGOs and other stakeholders after two children were mauled by dogs in Vasant Kunj.”The NGOs have informed me that the sterilisation centres are working below capacity due to the lack of a budget, and the NGOs have asked for financial help. The AAP government is committed to resolving the issue of stray dogs and creating a safe environment for people and dogs,” she said. The mayor has sought detailed reports on the operation of sterilisation centres and an action plan based on the feedback received from the centres. “We will ensure that all centres are operational soon,” she said. She said there was no census on strays done in the 7-8 years. “I have directed officials to implement sterilisation programmes after involving RWAs, local community feeders and dog lovers,” she said. On the Vasant Kunj incident, Oberoi said the post-mortem report of the kids was awaited.
