Jawaharlal Nehru University (File photo)NEW DELHI: To provide a platform to those seeking jobs abroad, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will start a Centre of Excellence (CoE) where PhD scholars of the varsity’s School of International Studies (SIS) will conduct digital surveys and ascertain skill gaps and related economic and sectoral skill requirements. The centre will be developed in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration and even the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)will be involved. The CoE is projected to research and publish data about mobility, harness sectoral data for creating economic and skill radar, and developing a happiness index, among others, officials said. “The digital survey will also be instrumentalised as an economic and skill radar for foreign companies in India and for the overseas Indian diaspora. The research will entail conducting digital surveys, ascertaining skill gaps and related economic and sectoral skill requirements and publishing the findings in relevant fora,” an official explained. JNU rector Ajay Dubey told TOI, “The essential idea is to utilise the capacity of PhD students to create a database for potential job seekers and generate data on international mobility and the exposure available. A dashboard will be created where all professionals who are interested in moving out of the country can seek information and get linked to job opportunities. What are the existing patterns, how can the move be planned, what are the issues faced by people and so on, will be explored at the centre.” Dubey said SIS had 15 centres, each concentrating on a different part of the world. The centre will be functional once the MEA moves ahead with the proposal, the rector said. “MEA will also help in exploring the local pattern, language and cultural issues which are there. This will help job seekers make informed decisions.” According to officials, “The data collected by CoE from surveys will be used for sector-specific skill gap analysis and demand forecasting to support the ecosystem of corporates, investors, academia and job seekers. Besides digital surveys, focused research-based studies will also be conducted for data gathering, publishing and analysis.” Following the signing of a memorandum of understanding, JNU vice-chancellor Santishree D Pandit said the agreement was in sync with the government’s foreign policy of “development, democracy and diaspora”. She added, “The research will not only help the government but also the migrating diaspora with authenticated data and counter the malpractices in migration.” FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIAFacebookTwitterInstagramKOO APPYOUTUBE
