NEW DELHI: The prosecution on Monday told a court that despite realising that something was stuck under their vehicle, the accused in the Kanjhawala hit-and-run case kept driving, causing an agonising death for 20-year-old Anjali Singh. According to the prosecution, a CCTV camera footage has revealed that two accused even got out of the vehicle. Additional public prosecutor Atul Srivastava, appearing for Delhi Police, told the court of metropolitan magistrate Sanya Dalal, “Two persons got down from the vehicle, inspected what was under the wheel. They were well aware about someone stuck under the wheel.” When the judge asked if they were aware of a body being dragged, Srivastava replied, “Yes.” However, he refused to disclose their identity in the open court, stating that their names and details can be given in writing to the court. “It’s not proper to disclose their names at this moment,” he submitted. When the court questioned why police wanted the judicial custody, Srivastava said a hearing capacity test of the accused was needed to ascertain if they were able to hear the victim while she was being dragged. The court sent the six accused — Deepak Khanna, Amit Khanna, Manoj Mittal, Krishan, Ashutosh Bhardwaj and Mithun — to 14 days’ judicial custody. When the court asked the prosecution how the police custody of four days was utilised, he said they had confronted the accused with each other, mapped the route, worked out the timeline, collected six CCTV camera footage and found a new witness who was present just 100 metres from the accident spot. Angry over the “delayed” procurement of the CCTV camera footage, the judge asked, “Will you be gathering CCTV footage for 90 days? Will you do it after the footage get tampered with? Why can’t you capture the footage at one go?” The prosecution replied that the accused were taking them to different spots. “The route is long, so it’s taking time,” police said. The court was also told that 20 witnesses had been examined. Meanwhile, one of the accused, Bhardwaj, moved for bail following which the court asked police to file a reply by Tuesday. The plea will be heard at 12.30pm on Tuesday. On Saturday, another accused, Ankush Khanna, who was not in the car, was granted bail.
