NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Wednesday that the Delhi government will give an ex-gratia of Rs 1 crore each to the kin of eight police and armed forces personnel who died in the line of duty, including an Army co-pilot whose body was found after 75 days following a chopper crash. Dwarka-resident Jayant Joshi was a co-pilot of an Army helicopter that crashed and sank into Ranjit Sagar Dam in August 2021.His body was recovered from the water body in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir after nearly 75 days.”We see how our soldiers lay down their lives on the borders for our safety, how policemen put their lives on the line for our safety.”Our home guards and civil defense volunteers protect us without caring for their lives. When such people become martyrs, there is no one to check on their families,” PTI quoted him as saying.Till now the system was terrible, he said, adding that a small amount was given by the government, which was very less for a family to live in dignity.”No amount can suffice for the lives of these bravehearts but ever since our government has been formed in Delhi, we have decided that to help and honour the families of the martyrs, they will be given a Samman Rashi of one crore each,” he said.These soldiers were serving in the Army, Police, Fire Department and Home Guard.Kejriwal said in the last seven to eight years, the Delhi government has given Rs 1 crore as aid to the families of many such people.”I myself have gone to the homes of many martyrs and given cheques to their families. Today, I am announcing the names of eight such martyrs, who martyred in the recent past. The Delhi government has decided that the families of these eight martyrs will be given a Samman Rashi of Rs 1 crore each,” he said.Among the eight is Dinesh Kumar, a resident of Nangloi, who used to work as an inspector in 205 Cobra Battalion of CRPF.He was seriously injured in an IED blast in 2013 and remained in the hospital for a long time and passed away in 2017.The eight also include Mahavir ji, a sub-inspector in Delhi Police and a resident of Saraswati Garden, who was hit by a vehicle while doing his duty at Mehta Chowk. He was taken to the hospital, but he passed away, Kejriwal said.Praveen Kumar, an operator in the Delhi Fire department, was killed during a firefighting operation. Rohini-resident Radheshyam, Assistant Sub-Inspector in Burari traffic circle, was also hit by a car when he tried catching the vehicle which was not following traffic rules.Delhi Home Guard Bharat Singh, resident of Narela, was conducting night patrolling on January 6, 2021 on Outer Ring Road when he was hit by an unknown vehicle, leading to his death.Delhi Home Guard Naresh Kumar was working in Laxmi Nagar police station when he fell victim to a vehicle while on picket duty.Similarly, Puneet Gupta, a resident of Pandav Nagar, was a civil defence volunteer and died after being hit by a speeding truck.”We salute these eight martyrs on behalf of the entire Delhi and the country. We pray to God to give peace to their souls and give strength to their families to bear this tragedy. If the families of these martyrs have any need in future also, the Delhi government will always stand with them,” he said.The Delhi government has a scheme of awarding ex-gratia relief of Rs 1 crore each to families of those who died in the line of duty.
