NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on Thursday sent a fresh proposal to lieutenant governor VK Saxena to conduct mayoral elections on February 16.“A proposal was sent by Municipal Corporation of Delhi to the Delhi government to hold elections on February 16. Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal approved the proposal,” said a statement from the CM office.A day earlier, the Supreme Court had sought responses of the office of the lieutenant governor, pro tem presiding officer and others on a plea filed by the AAP mayoral candidate, Shelly Oberoi, seeking early holding of the polls. The responses were sought by February 13, the next date of hearing.The MCD House was on Monday adjourned for the third time in a month without electing mayor and deputy mayor of Delhi after a ruckus erupted over the BJP’s demand for nominated members or aldermen being allowed to vote in mayoral elections. AAP had then decided to go to the court.Prior to Monday, two futile attempts had been made-on January 6 and 24-to hold the mayoral elections. Polling for the MCD elections took place on December 4 and the results were announced on December 7. AAP managed to win 134 out of 250 seats while BJP bagged 104 seats and Congress 9.
