On Friday, the city recorded 10 deaths due to the novel coronavirus infection. The last time Delhi saw deaths in double digits was on February 13 when 12 Covid patients succumbed to the virus. Six patients died on Thursday. Delhi on Friday reported 2,136 new Covid cases, a little less than Thursday’s 2,726 fresh cases. This is the 10th consecutive day when the city logged over 2,000 fresh infections. The positivity rate was recorded at 15.02% as against Thursday’s 14.4%. With the new cases, the active case tally in the city rose to 8,343 on Friday, data showed. “If we look at the deaths, they are not directly linked with Covid infection. This time the infection is higher, but it is limited to a few days. Most of the fatalities happening are among those patients who are already admitted to ICU for other health concerns and incidentally testing Covid-positive. So their chances of survival are low,” said Dr Jugal Kishore, head of medicine department at Safdarjung Hospital. “This variant BA 2.75 is more transmissible than the original Omicron virus and the mutations will keep happening,” he added. The city on Wednesday reported eight Covid fatalities, the highest in nearly 180 days, and 2,146 cases with a positivity rate of 17.83%. On Tuesday, Delhi reported 2,495 coronavirus cases with a positivity rate of 15.41% and seven fatalities. “We need to change the policy of testing now. The focus should be more on those patients who are already admitted to hospital instead of those with minor symptoms. In the current situation, if anyone goes for Covid sampling, there are high chances that the person will test positive for the infection,” Dr Kishore pointed out.
