NEW DELHI: In order to tackle fire incidents in Chandni Chowk, Delhi Fire Services (DFS) has set up a permanent post in the congested area to ensure faster response. The area, which is a market hub for traders, often witnesses fires that spread quickly because the shops and houses are located in close proximity. Delhi LG VK Saxena had earlier asked the fire department to identify 50 congested points, such as Chandni Chowk, and deploy fire tenders and take other necessary steps to ensure faster and timely response. DFS director Atul Garg said there was no better occasion than Diwali to take the first step towards identifying such areas. “We have deployed a fire tender permanently at the town hall in Chandni Chowk. The area is congested and has a large number of people working, visiting and residing. Whenever fire calls are received from this place, they are usually major as the blaze spreads quickly,” he said. Fire officials said 15 staffers will work in two shifts round the clock on ground. The stationing of the fire tender will not only cut response time, but also boost the confidence of locals, they added.
