NEW DELHI: Five youths drowned during idol immersion in the Yamuna on Sunday. Police said they have recovered their bodies. The deceased were identified as Ankit (20), Lucky (16), Lalit (17), Beeru (19) and Ritu Raj (20). All of them lived at Salarpur village in Greater Noida. The fire department received a call around 1.30 pm about the incident and a fire tender was sent to the spot. Police said they were told that five youths were missing after they went in for idol immersion. DCP (southeast) Esha Pandey said they were told that a group of around 20 youths had come to the Yamuna bank from Salarpur village for the idol immersion. “As the idol didn’t get immersed properly, six of the youths went into the river again. They were caught in the current and only one of them could return safely,” police said. A team from Jamia Nagar police station reached the spot and other agencies were informed. A rescue operation was launched and divers jumped into the river. An officer said, “Bodies of five youths were fished out from the river with the help of the divers and they were sent for postmortem.” The family members of the deceased were informed about the incident.
