NEW DELHI: Every morning, Ranjeet Singh dressed up like an office-goer, but he didn’t go to any office. His main job was to snatch gold chains of mostly college-going girls and women and often morning walkers. The 40-year-old, who was trapped by police in west Delhi last week, was also arrested earlier in at least 36 cases.Usually snatching is committed by two persons, but over the years, Singh alias Billa became an expert and claimed to have carried out around 200 snatchings, police said. He used to snatch the chain with his left hand while controlling the bike with the right one. The cops said he had been involved in at least 40 criminal cases. Singh used to remove his turban and wore a helmet to hide his identity. “He kept a shoulder bag in which he kept his turban while wearing the helmet,” said additional deputy commissioner of police (west) Akshat Kaushal. “Singh has been previously arrested in more than 36, including 13 robbery and seven snatching, cases. Nine gold chains were recovered from him this time along with a stolen bike that he used in crime,” Kaushal said. Repeated incidents of snatching were reported from Janakpuri and Vikaspuri recently, following which police teams started tracing the accused, he added.“He targeted college-going girls and women in the morning hours, at times also men who stepped out for morning walk. Since he knew the roads in west Delhi well, he targeted areas in this district. He used to steal high-end bikes and use them after parking his own scooter on the road side,” added Kaushal.Last Friday, police received an information that Singh would come near Nala Road in Raghubir Nagar. A trap was laid and police took him in custody. The motorcycle he was riding was stolen from the Rajendra Nagar police station area. The nine gold chains found on him were snatched from Tilak Nagar, Hari Nagar and Janakpuri.Singh told police that he was caught red-handed in 2020 during a snatching attempt. He was released on bail from Tihar Jail during Covid-19 and returned to his native place in Alwar. His wife works with an NGO in Nihal Vihar.
