NEW DELHI: Cyber crooks created a website similar to that of Tata Steel Limited and duped dozens of businessmen in the name of supplying them TMT bars at lucrative rates. The suspects even opened bank accounts with similar sounding names and received money fraudulently, sources said. The cops started an investigation after the owner of a construction firm in west Delhi’s Rajouri Garden reported being duped of Rs 55 lakh, taken as advance, by the gang. The police have filed an FIR and are tracking IP addresses and cellphone locations to nab the suspects, said an official. The victim in the case had published an advertisement on an e-commerce site and invited quotations for procurement of TMT bars for the purposes of construction. He was contacted by an individual who represented himself to be an employee of Tata Steel and made an offer to supply bars at rates lower than the market. If the order was prepaid, he was promised 10% additional discount on future orders. The accused allegedly shared details for bank transfers in accounts in names of Tata Steel after which the payment was made by the victim. However the order was never delivered. When the victim sought to lodge a grievance on the domain, which was linked to the accused’s email address, he found it suspended. The victim then contacted the Delhi office of Tata Steel Limited and was informed that no employee in that name existed.
