NEW DELHI: Three policemen on PCR duty showed daring and alacrity by thwarting a bank robbery in northwest Delhi’s Model Town on Tuesday afternoon. They overpowered a man who had threatened the staffers and customers inside a private bank and fired five rounds in the air from his semi-automatic pistol. No one was injured. The suspect, Imran alias Raja, a resident of Mustafabad and a tailor by profession working in a factory in Dayalpur, posed as a customer after sauntering into the bank. He engaged a banker in conversation before he pulled out the pistol and ordered the staffers to fill his bag with cash.A customer who had exited the bank just before Imran pulled the trigger made a PCR call at 2.40 pm on hearing the gunshots. Numerous other calls to cops followed. The three policemen – ASI Girish and head constables Roshan and Varun Alok of Model Town police station, who were on patrol duty – reached the bank. “From the gate, they saw that people were hiding under the tables. Deeming it too risky to engage Imran in a gunfight, one of the cops stormed the bank and challenged him, while the other two overpowered him before he could do anything,” a police officer said.DCP (northwest) Jitendra Kumar Meena said the pistol along with two magazines, seven live cartridges and five empty cartridges were recovered from Imran. “He had fired five rounds to scare people,” Meena said. There was a security guard, but he didn’t frisk Imran or check his bag.According to police, the accused was in an intoxicated state. However, they will wait for his medical report to confirm whether he was drunk or had taken any drug. An officer said Imran claimed he hatched the plan to rob the bank after watching a movie.
