NEW DELHI: Resident doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have been allegedly getting worms, larvae and insects from the tap water in their hostels. The problem has not been resolved despite multiple complaints registered by them. They have now sent a letter to the director urging him to treat this as a “medical emergency” as the water is used for cleaning vegetables, fruits and bathing by them. In the letter, the resident doctors have stated that “live adult worms, larvae and insects” have been found in the water supply in a few hostels for the last one week. “This issue has been a persistent problem. They had reported this to the concerned authority in October this year too but no adequate measures were taken,” the letter stated. The letter also mentioned that whenever the department of microbiology has conducted water quality tests in the hostels, the report has been “unsatisfactory and grossly unfit for human consumption”. Most of the affected hostels are from the trauma centre campus, stated the letter, adding that many residents are also facing gastrointestinal difficulties.Hospital superintendent Sandeep Aggarwal refused to comment on the issue.
