The men didn’t know Mayank, but got into an argument with him and returned with reinforcementsNEW DELHI: A 25-year-old hotel management graduate was chased and stabbed to death by a group of men in full public view at a busy market in south Delhi’s Begumpur area on Thursday evening. The victim, Mayank Panwar, was brutally assaulted before being stabbed around a dozen times even as a crowd gathered and cars stopped on the road to watch the incident unfold. The incident was captured by a CCTV camera installed near the spot. Though the footage shows many of the faces quite clearly, police had not arrested anyone even 24 hours after the incident. Four persons are learned to have been detained. Police received a PCR call about the incident from a passerby around 7.30pm. The caller reported a stabbing incident near Gate No. 3 of the DDA market at Begumpur, close to Sarvapriya Vihar. A 25-year-old man, Mayank Panwar, who was stabbed a group of men in a busy market in Begumpur on Thursday was shifted to AIIMS Trauma Centre by the time police reached the spot. The hospital later informed the cops about his death. According to Benita Mary Jaiker, DCP South, Mayank’s friend, Vikas Panwar, told them that they were sitting at the ASI-protected ruins of Vijay Mandal, also locally referred to as the Qila, around 7 pm. The two were apparently drinking when 4-5 people, who too were drinking and whom they didn’t know, got into an argument with Mayank over a trivial matter — they accused him of staring at them. They eventually disengaged and left, only to return with reinforcements. This group then started throwing stones at the two men. Mayank tried to flee from the spot with the men chasing him. They finally overpowered him near the market and stabbed him multiple times, leading to his death. “A case of murder has been registered and raids are on to nab these men,” said the DCP. Mayank stayed with his parents and elder brother at the nearby Shahpur Jat village. He had studied at Mount Carmel School and done hotel management from IHM Rohtak besides an internship at a five-star hotel. The family said he was planning to go to Goa for work. On Thursday, he, along with his cousins and family, had celebrated Rakhi and left the house only in the evening to meet his friend. When TOI visited the family on Friday, Mayank’s mother, Savita, was inconsolable. “So many people just stood by and watched, no one came forward. I have no idea why he was killed,” she said. “The way they have killed him was so brutal. He was lying on the road bleeding, but no one rushed him to the hospital. I want all of them to be hanged to death.” Savita said Mayank was a very friendly person and not in the habit of picking up fights. He was jovial, would often joke and smiled most of the time. He was also an animal lover and had adopted five stray dogs. He loved birds too and fed them. The neighbours knew him as a helpful person. “He would step out usually with his friends but never shared with us what happened outside home. I think he met Vikas during his internship,” added Savita. TOI visited the Qila where Mayank had gone with his friend. The security guard said that fights after sunset were very common there as it had become a haunt for drunkards and drug addicts. Locals told TOI that patrolling was bare minimum and a few days back a man had beaten someone so badly during a fight that he broke his leg. “The gate is always open, and even if it’s locked, people break the lock and enter,” said a resident. “People usually come here to drink and fights erupt. There is no one to keep a check on the visitors. The Qila has knee-length grass and the guard leaves by 6pm,” he said. FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIAFacebookTwitterInstagramKOO APPYOUTUBE
