NEW DELHI: Gangster Yogesh Tunda revealed during informal questioning that the reason he and his associates stabbed Sunil Tillu Tajpuria around 100 times in Tihar Jail on Tuesday was because of a personal grudge. Besides avenging Jitender Gogi’s death in September 2021, Yogesh also wanted to get back at Tajpuria for the attack on him in Jail 8 in December 2021 when the murdered gangster’s henchman, Chiku, had stabbed him several times.”Yogesh was attacked by two prisoners who belonged to the Tajpuria gang on December 10, 2021, with a barber’s scissors when getting a haircut in the prison ward,” revealed a jail official on Wednesday. “Yogesh did not want to file any complaint, but the cops registered a case based on the complaint of the jail authorities.” Yogesh lost sensation in one of his hands in the attack and recovered only months afterwards. This injury earned him the nickname of Tunda, sources said. The plan to kill Tajpuria was in the works for some time with an inquiry revealing that jail officials had last month recovered 22 sharpened and 32 unsharpened rods from jails 8 and 9, where the gang war took place on Tuesday morning. The killers had also used the blades of the metal exhaust fans to fabricate weapons, a probe revealed.Delhi Police will now move court for permission to officially arrest and interrogate Tajpuria’s four killers – Yogesh, Deepak Dabas alias Teetar, Riyaz Khan and Rajesh Bawania. On Wednesday, the police team inspected the crime spot and collected evidence. Bedsheets, the accused’s blood-stained clothes and four improvised weapons were recovered from the spot, a police officer disclosed. The identities of the accused and the sequence of events were established after scanning footage from CCTV cameras.Akshat Kaushal, additional DCP (West), said, “We will soon be approaching the court to seek permission to interrogate the suspects. Our teams have visited the murder spot and recovered the weapons likely used by the suspects in the commission of the crime.”All the four accused have been shifted to different cells in Tihar. The preliminary probe suggests that clothes were used to prise apart the prison bars and grille but they were old and rusted, so not a challenging task. Jail officials will now check the other bars and replace them if necessary. A proposal to avoid ferrying high-risk criminals to court by using video conferencing for hearings is also being mulled.
