NEW DELHI: A vigilance team recovered eight mobile phones and at least six improvised knives during searches at Mandoli Jail where raids were conducted on Sunday night after multiple complaints against an extortion ring being run from inside the prison. According to officials, action has been taken against two deputy superintendents and three head warders in this regard. The recoveries were made from jail numbers 12 and 13, which have repeat offenders. Three of the recovered phones are smartphones, sources said. After the recovery of the cell phones, the prison department started an internal probe into the role of jail staff in the case. Sources said three persons who possessed these phones are “hardcore” criminals and one of them belongs to the Jitender Gogi gang. Four mobile phones were recovered from one of the accused. The vigilance team was constituted by DG Prisons Sanjay Baniwal and the raid was conducted by the special search team along with 104 Tamil Nadu Special Police personnel on Sunday from 9.25 pm to 10.50 pm. The mobile phones were hidden behind the tiles, the water tanks, dysfunctional water pipelines, etc. Besides, eight handmade knives, loose tobacco, and white lime were also recovered. The police have been informed to further investigate the matter. It is yet to be ascertained if Sukesh Chandrasekhar was using any of these mobile phones.
