NEW DELHI: Nearly 64,000 seats at Delhi University have already been filled after the release of the second allocation list. The varsity has given students time till 12 midnight Thursday to pay the fee, saying non-payment will result in cancellation of allocation. The university will release details of the vacant seats — which are now less than 10,000 — on Friday. DU has a total of 70,000 seats. After the first allocation list, 59,100 students took admission and were given the option to upgrade to seats of higher preference. Later, 9,439 students were ‘upgraded’. After the second allocation, 15,236 students have taken admission. Most of the vacant seats after the first allocation list were in the science stream courses. DU will declare the vacant seats on Friday and provide the option of mid-entry and reordering of preferences till November 7. Mid-entry is provided to those students who, due to some reason, have missed out on allocation, mostly on account of not filling the maximum preferences. The third allocation list will be declared on November 10 along with the results of the other super-numerary quota, such as sports, extracurricular activities (ECA), children with war widows and others. Trials in the ECA and sports category have been conducted. The third round of admission will be completed by November 15. Thereafter, depending on the availability of seats, the university may conduct spot-round admission. Students who were earlier allocated seats but withdrew their admission can take part in this round. Haneet Gandhi, dean of admissions, said, “We advise students not to withdraw admission if they have been allotted seats. In the spot admission, we are not sure if there will be enough seats vacant.” Classes for first-year students began at the university on Wednesday.
