NEW DELHI: Four people, including a four-year-old boy, died after a truck overturned and crushed them in central Delhi’s Anand Parbat early on Saturday. Police said the three other victims – a husband-wife duo and the boy’s father – were labourers in a road construction project. The truck driver fled the scene after the incident but was later arrested in Samaypur Badli. Labourers held a protest on Rohtak Road that caused traffic snarls in central Delhi for several hours.Among the deceased, Ramesh, 30, and his wife, Sonam, 25, were natives of Tikamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, while Hariom alias Killu, 40, and his son Anuj, 4, who was playing on the road, were from Jhansi. They lived in shanties near Anand Parbat. Several others were injured.Though the Municipal Corporation of Delhi claimed that the truck belonged to a private concessionaire, police are investigating whether the truck was on duty for the civic body at the time of the accident. Witnesses claimed that when it overturned, garbage and waste material were thrown out.The cops received information about the accident at 1.27 am. “The caller told us that a truck had turned turtle at street No. 10 in Anand Parbat and four to five people were trapped under it,” said a police officer. Sanjay Sain, DCP (Central), said the truck was raised by a crane and the people beneath it pulled out. “Three had died on the spot. Another succumbed to his injuries a little later,” said Sain. The police inquiry established that the truck was speeding and the driver had lost control. Eyewitness Moti, a labourer who was also injured, said they were installing tiles on the road when the truck hit a shop and then flipped on them. “There were 15 of us, including two children, on the road. My lower body was trapped beneath the truck. Some people pulled me out and took me to hospital,” said Moti, who suffered injuries on both legs.Killu’s wife, Rajkumari, who was present at the site, alleged that the truck fell on her husband and son a second time after being lifted by the crane. The cops, however, denied these claims.Manju Lal, 55, a relative of Ramesh, said they could see body parts lying on the road. “When I pulled Ramesh and his wife out from beneath the truck, I could see no sign of life in them. They had come to Delhi three months ago to find employment,” said Lal.Meanwhile, the driver of the offending vehicle, Suman Kumar, fled the scene after the incident but was later apprehended in Samaypur Badli. A police officer said, “We are waiting for the medical report to confirm whether Suman was drunk at the time of the incident.”
