NEW DELHI: Over 2,000kg of illegal firecrackers were seized and six people arrested from various parts of the city in the run-up to Diwali. Three people, identified as Shanky (33), Suresh Tareja (59) and Rakesh Kumar (50), were arrested in Dwarka. Deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka) M Harsha Vardhan said they received information about sale of illegal firecrackers at three shops located in Uttam Nagar and Rawta Mor. A raid was conducted and the accused, along with 224kg of firecrackers, were caught on Monday. In another case, a 53-year-old man, identified as Sanjay Kumar, was arrested in south Delhi’s Ambedkar Nagar and 1,193kg of banned crackers seized. “At 4.30pm Monday, staff on patrol duty in Madangir noticed a person carrying plastic bags. When they questioned him, the man replied that they contained some shop articles. However, on checking the bags, banned firecrackers were found,” police said. Police arrested another person in Ambedkar Nagar — a 27-year-old man identified as Sagar, who belongs to Meerut. Police said they conducted a raid on a tip-off and caught Sagar with 283kg of crackers. In northeast Delhi’s Welcome, Kapil (27), a resident of Burari, was arrested with 611kg of firecrackers. DCP (northeast) Sanjay Sain said information was received about the supply of crackers in a tempo. “Cops began patrolling in plainclothes around Babarpur bus terminal and saw a tempo. The driver tried to mislead the police team and was not able to reply satisfactorily. On checking, the tempo was found to contain 13 cartons with a huge quantity of crackers,” the DCP said. The accused said he had picked the cartons from Burari to deliver them at Shahdara. He used to buy firecrackers from different states through parcel services and deliver them to shops in Delhi-NCR in the tempo owned by his elder brother.
