GHAZIABAD: The husband of a woman who eloped earlier this week was arrested for murdering her lover’s father on Friday morning.Mangeram (60), who ran a grocery store, was slashed with a sharp object on the neck, probably an axe, and bled to death. Police said Mangeram’s 25-year-old son had run away from home with the accused’s wife after which the two families living at New Vikas Nagar in Loni were locked in a bitter dispute.Based on the account of events by Mangeram’s wife Munni, Sunil (27), a carpenter, was arrested. Munni told police she found her husband covered in blood under the blanket on the charpoy where he slept when she woke up on Friday. Munni didn’t see Sunil but told police she suspected him. “On Thursday night, he made several calls to us and asked where his wife was. We didn’t have any idea about his wife’s location,” she said. Loni ACP Rajneesh Kumar Upadhyay said police were informed of the murder at 7.30am. “We learnt that a couple of days ago, Mangeram and Munni’s son Kapil fled with Sunil’s wife, who is 26 years old,” he said.Upadhyay said Sunil was arrested in the afternoon from the Loni area. During interrogation, he is believed to have told police that he attacked Mangeram with an axe around 1am. This is not the first time Sunil’s wife and Kapil have run away. One month ago, they had done the same but returned after a couple of days,” the ACP said. An FIR was filed against Sunil under section 302 (murder) of the IPC. Police said they have recovered the axe used in the crime.
